Your 5 minute timer is ready

The timer is already set to 5 minutes. Press Start and the countdown begins: the digits, the progress bar and the tab title all show the time left. When it reaches zero, the sound rings until you stop it. Five minutes may be the most useful short timer of all: a break, a warm-up, a tidy-up or a short meditation.

What a 5 minute timer is good for

  • Pomodoro break: The classic short break after 25 minutes of focus. The Pomodoro timer chains work and breaks for you.
  • Coffee break: The Coffee break preset in the Relax category also lasts 5 minutes.
  • Warm-up: Jog in place, swing your arms and legs and do a few squats before a workout.
  • Short meditation: Five minutes a day is a common starting point for beginners.
  • Five-minute pickup: Pick one room and tidy until the sound. It is surprising how much gets done.
  • Couscous: Pour boiling water over the couscous, cover it and let it stand for 5 minutes before fluffing.
  • Class activity: A short quiz, a think-pair-share or a quick review at the end of a lesson.
  • Countdown for kids: A five-minute warning before bedtime, bath time or leaving the house.

5 minutes in seconds, and what fits in them

5 minutes is 300 seconds, one twelfth of an hour. Twelve blocks of five minutes make an hour, which is why clock faces are marked in fives: when the minute hand points at the 3, it is 15 minutes past.

A tip for your 5 minutes

Try the five-minute rule when a task feels too big: commit to five minutes, nothing more. Most of the time, getting started is enough to keep you going. If you want more, the 10 minute timer is one tap away.

How to use the 5 minute timer

  1. Press Start. The countdown runs from 5 minutes down to zero.
  2. Pick a sound if you like. Turn the list to hear a bell, a chime, a classic beep, a digital beep or a gentle rise.
  3. Switch tabs freely. The countdown follows your device clock and stays exact. Keep this tab open to hear the sound.
  4. Stop the sound at zero, or tap +1 min if you need a little longer.

Need another length? Turn the minute wheel, or tap the digits and type the time on the keypad. The online timer also has presets for cooking, sport and relaxing, and a full screen mode that makes the countdown readable from across the room.

Questions

How many seconds are in 5 minutes?

5 minutes is 300 seconds. The timer counts them down on screen, and the tab title shows the time left too.

What can I do in a 5 minute break?

Stand up and stretch, refill your water, step outside or look at something far away to rest your eyes. Avoid starting something you cannot stop in five minutes, like scrolling a feed.

Is 5 minutes long enough to meditate?

For many beginners, yes: a short daily session is easier to keep up than a long one. Add time bit by bit if you enjoy it. This is general wellbeing advice, not medical advice.

Is the 5 minute timer free?

Yes. There is no account and no app to install, and once the page has loaded, the timer and its sounds work offline.

Can I add time when the 5 minute timer ends?

Yes. When the sound rings, tap +1 min to add one more minute. Tap it again for another, or press Reset to start over.
