Your 6 minute timer is ready

The timer is already set to 6 minutes. Press Start and the countdown begins: the digits, the progress bar and the tab title all show the time left. When it reaches zero, the sound rings until you stop it. Six minutes is the time for a jammy egg, with a firm white and a soft, creamy yolk. It is also the default setting of the egg timer.

What a 6 minute timer is good for

  • Jammy egg: A large egg at room temperature, lowered into boiling water, then cooled in cold water. The Jammy egg preset in Cooking runs exactly 6 minutes.
  • Eggs for ramen: Many cooks boil fridge-cold eggs for 6 to 7 minutes, chill them in ice water, peel them and marinate them in soy sauce.
  • Toasted nuts: Stir almonds, walnuts or seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat and check them at 6 minutes.
  • Shorter shower: The average shower lasts about 8 minutes, according to the EPA’s WaterSense program. Cutting it to six saves water and energy.
  • Core circuit: Six exercises of one minute each: plank, left and right side planks, crunches, bicycle crunches and a hollow hold.
  • Free writing: Write whatever comes to mind for six minutes, without stopping or editing.
  • Bedtime story: Many picture books take five to ten minutes to read aloud. Six minutes is a nice limit for one more story.

6 minutes in seconds, and what fits in them

6 minutes is 360 seconds, one tenth of an hour. Health professionals use a six-minute walk test to measure how far a person can walk at their own pace in that time.

A tip for your 6 minutes

For a jammy egg that peels cleanly, move it to ice water for at least five minutes as soon as the timer rings. Crack the shell all over and start peeling at the wide end, where the air pocket is. For a runnier yolk, use the 3 minute timer; for a firm one, the 9 minute timer.

How to use the 6 minute timer

  1. Press Start. The countdown runs from 6 minutes down to zero.
  2. Pick a sound if you like. Turn the list to hear a bell, a chime, a classic beep, a digital beep or a gentle rise.
  3. Switch tabs freely. The countdown follows your device clock and stays exact. Keep this tab open to hear the sound.
  4. Stop the sound at zero, or tap +1 min if you need a little longer.

Need another length? Turn the minute wheel, or tap the digits and type the time on the keypad. The online timer also has presets for cooking, sport and relaxing, and a full screen mode that makes the countdown readable from across the room.
