Wake up at 4:00 AM
4:00 AM is an early start. Whether you have a flight to catch, a shift to open or a run before sunrise, this page is ready to wake you at 4:00 AM. Pick a sound, press Set alarm and make the most of a short night. Night mode keeps the screen almost black while you sleep.
Who gets up at 4:00 AM?
- Travelers with an early flight. Many airlines suggest arriving about two hours before a domestic departure, so a 6:00 AM flight means leaving home in the dark.
- Bakers and pastry cooks, who shape and bake the morning bread before the doors open.
- Early shift workers in warehouses, delivery, airports and hospitals.
- Farmers, fishermen and market vendors who start their day before dawn.
A bit of history: the alarm clock often called the first American one, built in 1787 by Levi Hutchins of Concord, New Hampshire, could ring at only one time. It was 4:00 AM, the hour he got up.
When to go to bed for a 4:00 AM alarm
Sleep runs in cycles of about 90 minutes, from light sleep to deep sleep and dream sleep. Waking at the end of a cycle often feels easier than waking in the middle of one. Counting about 15 minutes to fall asleep, these bedtimes line up with a 4:00 AM wake-up:
- 6:45 PM: 6 cycles, about 9 hours of sleep
- 8:15 PM: 5 cycles, about 7.5 hours of sleep
- 9:45 PM: 4 cycles, about 6 hours of sleep
Before a very early start, four or five cycles are often more realistic than six, which would mean going to bed around 6:45 PM.
These are general rules of thumb, not medical advice. Cycle length varies from person to person and from night to night.
Tips for waking up at 4:00 AM
- Get ready the night before. Lay out your clothes, pack your bag and keep tickets or keys by the door.
- Set a backup. Open a second tab and set another alarm 10 minutes later. Each tab holds one alarm.
- Turn on a bright light as soon as you are up. It helps your body accept that the day has started.
- Plan a short nap if the night was short: the 20 minute timer is ideal in the early afternoon.

How to use the 4:00 AM alarm
- Check the time. The wheels already show 4:00 AM. Turn them, or tap a number, to change it.
- Choose a sound. Turn the list to hear the bell, the chime, the classic beep, the digital beep or the gentle rise, and choose whether it rings until you stop it or just once.
- Press Set alarm. The page confirms your choice, for example “Set for 4:00 AM, with a bell”, and counts down the time left. Night mode then fades the screen to black.
- Keep this tab open and the computer awake. When it rings, press Stop, or Snooze 5 min for a little more sleep.
