Your 9 minute timer is ready

The timer is already set to 9 minutes. Press Start and the countdown begins: the digits, the progress bar and the tab title all show the time left. When it reaches zero, the sound rings until you stop it. Nine minutes gives a hard-boiled egg with a fully set, pale yellow yolk and no green ring, ready for salads, sandwiches and deviled eggs.

What a 9 minute timer is good for

  • Hard-boiled eggs: A large egg at room temperature in boiling water. The Hard-boiled egg preset in Cooking is set to 9 minutes, and the egg timer shows the yolk setting on screen.
  • Deviled eggs and egg salad: Cook, cool and peel a batch for the week. Hard-boiled eggs keep about a week in the fridge.
  • Cookies: Many drop cookie recipes bake for 9 to 11 minutes. Check the first batch at 9.
  • Three-by-three circuit: Three exercises of one minute, three times over: squats, push-ups and mountain climbers.
  • Talk rehearsal: At a normal pace, nine minutes is about 1,200 words. Time a full run-through of a short presentation.
  • Homework sprint: One worksheet or one set of exercises, then a break.
  • Walk around the block: A short walk after lunch or between two calls.

9 minutes in seconds, and what fits in them

9 minutes is 540 seconds. On many traditional alarm clocks, the snooze button gives you nine extra minutes. The usual story is that early snooze mechanisms made nine minutes easier to build than ten. The online alarm clock here snoozes for 5 minutes instead.

A tip for your 9 minutes

To avoid the gray-green ring around the yolk, do not cook the eggs longer than needed, and cool them in cold water as soon as the timer rings. The ring forms when iron in the yolk meets sulfur from the white in overcooked eggs. For a softer center, try the 6 minute timer.

How to use the 9 minute timer

  1. Press Start. The countdown runs from 9 minutes down to zero.
  2. Pick a sound if you like. Turn the list to hear a bell, a chime, a classic beep, a digital beep or a gentle rise.
  3. Switch tabs freely. The countdown follows your device clock and stays exact. Keep this tab open to hear the sound.
  4. Stop the sound at zero, or tap +1 min if you need a little longer.

Need another length? Turn the minute wheel, or tap the digits and type the time on the keypad. The online timer also has presets for cooking, sport and relaxing, and a full screen mode that makes the countdown readable from across the room.

Questions

How many seconds are in 9 minutes?

9 minutes is 540 seconds. The timer counts them down on screen, and the tab title shows the time left too.

How long do you boil an egg for hard-boiled?

About 9 minutes for a large egg at room temperature lowered into boiling water, and about 10 minutes straight from the fridge. Cool the eggs in cold water right after.

Why do hard-boiled eggs get a green ring?

It is a harmless layer of iron sulfide that forms when eggs cook too long or cool too slowly. Time them precisely and chill them in cold water to keep the yolk bright yellow.

Does the 9 minute timer work on a phone?

Yes, in any modern browser. Keep the page in front with the screen on: the page asks your phone to keep the screen awake while the timer runs.

Can I pause the 9 minute timer?

Yes. Press Pause to freeze the countdown, Resume to continue and Reset to go back to 9 minutes.
