What this holiday calendar shows
Pick a country and a year. The list gives every national public holiday with its date and its day of the week, and the next one appears in large type with the number of days left. Switch to Regional to add the holidays that apply only in part of the country (a state, a canton, a province), or to All to see well-known days that are not days off, such as Mother’s Day or Halloween.
No date is typed by hand. Each holiday is calculated from its legal rule: a fixed date (July 4), a weekday in a month (the fourth Thursday of November), or a number of days after Easter (Whit Monday is Easter Sunday plus 50 days). That is why the calendar works for any year from 1990 to 2100, including the moves and additions of recent years, like Juneteenth in the United States since 2021 or St. Francis of Assisi in Italy from 2026.
How many public holidays per country
The table counts the national public holidays of each country, then the days off they actually give from Monday to Friday. The second number is the one that matters for your work schedule: a holiday on a Saturday or a Sunday gives nothing in most countries.
| Country | 2026 | Days off Mon to Fri | 2027 | Days off Mon to Fri |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| France | 11 | 9 | 11 | 7 |
| Belgium | 10 | 8 | 10 | 7 |
| Switzerland | 7 | 6 | 7 | 5 |

| United Kingdom | 8 | 8 | 8 | 8 |
| Germany | 9 | 7 | 9 | 5 |

Switzerland only has one federal holiday, August 1: the table counts the days off in all or nearly all cantons. For the United Kingdom, the figures are for England and Wales. Spain and Germany add many regional days on top of the national ones.
When a holiday falls on a weekend
Three systems exist side by side:
- Observed day (United States, Canadian federal public service): the holiday is taken the Friday before a Saturday holiday, or the Monday after a Sunday one. In 2027, Independence Day falls on a Sunday, so federal offices close on Monday, July 5.
- Substitute day (United Kingdom): the bank holiday moves to the next weekday. Christmas 2027 is a Saturday and Boxing Day a Sunday, so the substitute days are Monday, December 27 and Tuesday, December 28.
- No move (France, Germany, Italy, Austria, Portugal, Switzerland): the holiday stays on its date and the day off is lost. Belgium is a special case: workers get a replacement day, chosen by their employer.
Spain sits in between: when a national holiday falls on a Sunday, each autonomous community decides whether to move it to the Monday. In 2026, nine communities moved All Saints’ Day to Monday, November 2. Mexico avoids the question for three holidays by always holding them on a Monday.
Regional holidays
Many countries add holidays at a regional level. Germany has 9 nationwide holidays, but Catholic parts of Bavaria have up to 13 or 14. Switzerland leaves almost everything to its 26 cantons. In France, Alsace and Moselle keep Good Friday and December 26 from their German period, and the overseas departments mark the abolition of slavery. Spain’s 17 communities each choose a few days, Canada’s provinces have their own lists, and the UK has three calendars: England and Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The Regional view marks these days with the places where they apply. When you count working days for a deadline or a project, start from the national list, then remove your regional days: the business days calculator does the national part for you.
Holidays tied to Easter
Good Friday, Easter Monday, Ascension Day, Whit Monday and Corpus Christi move every year because they depend on the date of Easter, which can fall between March 22 and April 25. In 2026 Easter is on April 5, so Ascension falls on May 14; in 2027 Easter is on March 28 and Ascension on May 6. The Easter date calculator explains the rule and lists the movable feasts for any year.
Plan your long weekends
A holiday on a Tuesday or a Thursday creates a bridge: take the Monday or the Friday off and you get four days in a row for one day of leave. A holiday on a Wednesday needs two days of leave for five days off. Each country page lists the long weekends and bridge days of its year, for example France 2027, US federal holidays 2027, UK bank holidays 2027 and Germany 2027.
A concrete case: in France in 2026, May 1 and May 8 are both Fridays and Ascension is Thursday, May 14. Taking Friday, May 15 off gives a four-day weekend, the third long weekend of the month. To see the whole year at a glance, open the 2027 calendar; to count down to your next day off, use the countdown.
Sources and accuracy
The rules come from each country’s official texts: the French Labor Code (article L3133-1), 5 U.S.C. 6103 and the OPM schedule, the UK Banking and Financial Dealings Act 1971 and its yearly proclamations, the Canada Labour Code, the BOE in Spain, Law 260/1949 in Italy, the Portuguese Labor Code, Mexico’s Federal Labor Law, Brazil’s federal laws and yearly decree, and the cantonal list of the Swiss Federal Office of Justice. The 2026 and 2027 dates were checked against these official lists. One-off holidays, such as a royal funeral or a jubilee, are added when they are announced, so a distant year can still get one.
