First Martyrs of the Church of Rome, June 30
After the great fire of Rome in 64, the emperor Nero blamed the Christians. Tacitus describes how many were crucified, torn apart by dogs or burned as torches in Nero’s gardens. The day after the feast of Peter and Paul honors these unnamed martyrs.
On the General Roman Calendar, June 30 is an optional memorial: The First Martyrs of the Holy Roman Church.
