St. Lawrence, August 10
A deacon of Rome in charge of aid to the poor, Lawrence was ordered to hand over the Church’s treasures and presented the poor instead. He was martyred in 258, by tradition on a gridiron. The Perseid meteors of mid-August are called the “tears of St. Lawrence.”
On the General Roman Calendar, August 10 is a feast: Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr.
