St. Rose of Lima, August 23
Born in Lima in 1586, Isabel Flores de Oliva, nicknamed Rose, lived a life of prayer and penance in her parents’ home. A Dominican laywoman, she cared for the poor and the sick, including Indigenous people. She died at 31 and in 1671 became the first canonized saint of the Americas.
On the General Roman Calendar, August 23 is an optional memorial: Saint Rose of Lima, virgin.
