Bl. Urban V, December 19
Born in the south of France, Guillaume de Grimoard was abbot of Saint-Victor in Marseille when he was elected pope in 1362. Though based in Avignon, he tried to return the papacy to Rome but had to go back to Provence. He founded colleges and supported universities, and died in 1370.
December 19 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Blessed Urban V, pope on this date.
