St. Dominic of Silos, December 20
A shepherd who became a monk, Dominic (c. 1000-1073) restored the ruined abbey of Silos, in Castile, and made it a center of learning and of ransoming Christian captives. St. Dominic de Guzmán was named after him. The monks of Silos are known today for their recordings of Gregorian chant.
December 20 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Dominic of Silos, abbot on this date.

Keeping December 20
December 20 falls in the last days of Advent. Since the general calendar has no celebration that day, the Mass is usually that of the weekday of the season, and the saint may be remembered in local calendars or in personal prayer. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
