St. Kateri Tekakwitha, July 14
Born in 1656 to a Mohawk father and an Algonquin Christian mother, Kateri survived smallpox as a child and was baptized at 20. Mocked in her village, she fled to a Christian mission near Montreal, where she died in 1680. In 2012 she became the first Native American saint.
On the U.S. liturgical calendar, July 14 is a memorial: Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, virgin.
