St. Etheldreda, June 23
An East Anglian princess, Etheldreda married twice but, according to Bede, remained a virgin. In 673 she founded a double monastery at Ely, where she was abbess. Cheap lace sold at St. Audrey’s fair gave English the word “tawdry.”
June 23 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Etheldreda (Audrey), abbess on this date.
