St. François de Laval, May 6
A French priest sent to New France in 1659, François de Laval became the first bishop of Quebec. He founded the Seminary of Quebec, ancestor of Laval University, and fought the sale of alcohol to Indigenous peoples. He died in 1708 and was canonized in 2014.
May 6 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint François de Laval, bishop on this date.

May 6 falls in May, the month of Mary. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
