St. Pachomius, May 9
A former Roman soldier in Egypt, Pachomius (c. 292-348) founded at Tabennisi the first monasteries where monks lived together under a written rule. By his death thousands followed it. He is honored as the father of communal monastic life.
May 9 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Pachomius, abbot on this date.

Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
