Bl. John Duns Scotus, November 8
A Scottish Franciscan, Duns Scotus (c. 1266-1308) taught at Oxford, Paris and Cologne and was known as the “Subtle Doctor.” He defended Mary’s Immaculate Conception centuries before it became dogma. He was beatified in 1993.

Keeping November 8
November 8 falls in November, the month the Church dedicates to praying for the dead. Since the general calendar has no celebration that day, the Mass is usually that of the weekday of the season, and the saint may be remembered in local calendars or in personal prayer. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
