Sts. Zechariah and Elizabeth, November 5
Zechariah, a priest of the Temple, and his wife Elizabeth were old and childless when an angel announced the birth of John the Baptist. Zechariah doubted and was struck mute until the child’s birth, when he sang the Benedictus. Elizabeth welcomed Mary at the Visitation.
November 5 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saints Zechariah and Elizabeth, parents of John the Baptist on this date.

Keeping November 5
November 5 falls in November, the month the Church dedicates to praying for the dead. Since the general calendar has no celebration that day, the Mass is usually that of the weekday of the season, and the saint may be remembered in local calendars or in personal prayer. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival. If you know someone named Zachary, Zechariah, and Zack, it is a good day to send a note.
