St. Callistus I, October 14
A former slave who was once condemned to the mines of Sardinia, Callistus became pope around 217. He insisted that sinners who repented should be readmitted, which drew fierce criticism. The famous Catacomb of St. Callixtus on the Appian Way is named after him.
On the General Roman Calendar, October 14 is an optional memorial: Saint Callistus I, pope and martyr.
