St. Giles, September 1
A hermit of the seventh or eighth century, Giles lived in a forest near Nîmes, in southern France, fed by a deer, according to legend. Wounded by an arrow meant for the animal, he won from a king the land for a monastery. He is the patron of people with disabilities, and many English churches bear his name.
September 1 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Giles, abbot on this date.

Keeping September 1
September 1 falls in summer. Since the general calendar has no celebration that day, the Mass is usually that of the weekday of the season, and the saint may be remembered in local calendars or in personal prayer. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival. If you know someone named Giles, it is a good day to send a note.
