Father’s Day 2027: Sunday, June 20
Father’s Day is the third Sunday in June in the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. In 2027, that is Sunday, June 20. The countdown above aims at the start of the day. Change the time if you are planning a barbecue or a game for the afternoon.
How Father’s Day began
The idea came from Sonora Smart Dodd, a young woman from Spokane, Washington. Her father, a Civil War veteran, had raised his children alone. After hearing a Mother’s Day sermon in 1909, she asked for a day for fathers too, with the support of the local YMCA and churches. Spokane held the first Father’s Day on June 19, 1910.
The holiday took decades to become national. President Lyndon B. Johnson proclaimed the third Sunday in June as Father’s Day in 1966, and President Richard Nixon made it permanent in 1972.
Other countries, other dates
The third Sunday in June always falls between June 15 and June 21, so Father’s Day is often the weekend of the summer solstice: the countdown to summer gives the exact minute.
Spain, Italy and Portugal celebrate fathers on March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph. Australia and New Zealand celebrate on the first Sunday of September. France uses the same rule as the United States: the third Sunday in June.
