Mother’s Day 2027: Sunday, May 9
In the United States, Mother’s Day is the second Sunday in May. In 2027, that is Sunday, May 9. The countdown aims at the start of the day; set the time to brunch or lunch if you are planning a meal, so you know exactly how long you have left to get ready.
Where Mother’s Day comes from
The holiday owes a lot to Anna Jarvis, from West Virginia. After the death of her mother, she organized a service in her memory, and on May 10, 1908, a church in Grafton held the first Mother’s Day service. That day was the second Sunday in May, which became the rule. Anna Jarvis then wrote to politicians and newspapers for years. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made Mother’s Day a national holiday, first observed on May 10, 1914. Later in life, Jarvis fought against the commercial side of the day she had created.
Not the same day everywhere
If your mother lives abroad, check her calendar. The United Kingdom celebrates Mothering Sunday on the fourth Sunday of Lent, three weeks before Easter. Mexico celebrates on May 10, whatever the day of the week. In France, it is the last Sunday of May, or the first Sunday of June when the last Sunday of May is Pentecost.

Ideas
- Order early: flowers and deliveries get expensive and slow in the last days.
- Book brunch one or two weeks ahead: it is one of the busiest days of the year for restaurants.
- Call at the right time: if she lives in another time zone, the world clock shows her local time.
