St. Martin I, April 13
Pope from 649, Martin I held a council in Rome that condemned a doctrine favored by the Byzantine emperor. He was arrested, dragged to Constantinople, tried and exiled to Crimea, where he died of hunger and mistreatment in 655. He is the last pope honored as a martyr.
On the General Roman Calendar, April 13 is an optional memorial: Saint Martin I, pope and martyr.
