St. Leo IX, April 19
Born in Alsace as Bruno of Egisheim, Leo IX was pope from 1049 to 1054. He traveled widely to hold synods against simony and launched the reform that would transform the medieval Church. The break with Constantinople in 1054 came just after his death.
April 19 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Leo IX, pope on this date.
