St. Monica, August 27
Born in North Africa, Monica (c. 331-387) prayed for years for her son Augustine, brilliant but far from the faith. She followed him to Italy and saw him baptized in Milan in 387. She died soon after at Ostia, on the way home; she is the patron of mothers.
On the General Roman Calendar, August 27 is a memorial: Saint Monica.
