St. Augustine, August 28
Born in Thagaste in 354, Augustine taught rhetoric in Carthage, Rome and Milan before his conversion in 386. As bishop of Hippo, in today’s Algeria, he wrote the Confessions and The City of God, which shaped Western thought. He died in 430 as the Vandals besieged the city.
On the General Roman Calendar, August 28 is a memorial: Saint Augustine, bishop and doctor.
