All Saints, November 1
On November 1 the Church honors all the saints, known and unknown, who now share God’s life. The date was set in Rome in the eighth century and spread across the West under Louis the Pious. In the U.S. it is usually a holy day of obligation.
On the General Roman Calendar, November 1 is a solemnity: All Saints.

Keeping November 1
November 1 falls in November, the month the Church dedicates to praying for the dead. As a solemnity, it ranks among the highest celebrations of the year: the Mass includes the Gloria and the Creed, and some solemnities are holy days of obligation. Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
