St. Edmund the Martyr, November 20
King of East Anglia, Edmund was defeated by a Viking army in 869. He refused to renounce his faith or rule under their authority, and was tied to a tree, shot with arrows and beheaded. The town of Bury St Edmunds grew around his shrine.
November 20 has no celebration on the General Roman Calendar, so this page follows the Roman Martyrology, which remembers Saint Edmund, king and martyr on this date.

Families who keep name days often mark the day with a card, a candle or a favorite meal, and parishes named after the saint may hold a festival.
